چکیده

We discuss the reduction of gravitating Chern-Simons electrodynamics with two commuting Killing vectors to a dynamical problem with four degrees of freedom, and present regular particle-like solutions. In three space-dimensions, the abelian Higgs model coupled to Einstein gravity is known to admit static multi-vortex solutions [1]. Stationary vortex solutions arise [2] when a Chern-Simons term for the gauge field [3, 4] is added. We shall show here that, in this last case, the Higgs field is not really necessary, as sourceless gravitating Chern-Simons electrodynamics admits regular particle-like solutions. In the present talk, we first discuss the reduction of gravitating ChernSimons electrodynamics with two commuting Killing vectors to a dynamical problem. We then present exact particle-like solutions to this problem in the case where the cosmological constant is negative. Finally, we briefly discuss the generalization to the case where Einstein gravity is replaced by topologically massive gravity [4]. ∗invited talk at the workshop on Geometry of Constrained Dynamical Systems, Cambridge 15-18 June 1994

Theoretical Topics in Spacetime-symmetry Violations

The Lorentzand CPT-violating Chern–Simons extension of electrodynamics is considered. In the context of N = 4 supergravity in four spacetime dimensions, it is argued that cosmological solutions can generate this extension. Within Chern– Simons electrodynamics, theoretical and phenomenological topics are reviewed that concern the number of the remaining spacetime symmetries and the vacuum Cheren...

Distended Topologically Massive Electrodynamics

We extend topologically massive electrodynamics, both by adding a higher derivative action to cast the entire three-term model in Chern-Simons (CS) form, and by embedding it in an AdS background. It can then be written as the sum of two CS terms, one of which vanishes at the “chiral” point, in analogy with its gravitational topologically massive counterpart. Separately we treat pure CS electrod...

It is shown that the non-relativistic 'Dirac' equation of Lévy-Leblond, we used recently to describe a spin 1 2 field interacting non-relativistically with a Chern-Simons gauge field, can be obtained by lightlike reduction from 3 + 1 dimensions. This allows us to prove that the system is Schrödinger symmetric. A spinor representation of the Schrödinger group is presented. Static, self-dual solu...

Photon decay in a CPT-violating extension of quantum electrodynamics

We consider the process of photon decay in quantum electrodynamics with a CPTviolating Chern–Simons-like term added to the action. For a simplified model with only the quadratic Maxwell and Chern–Simons-like terms and the quartic Euler– Heisenberg term, we obtain a nonvanishing probability for the decay of a particular photon state into three others.

Electrically and magnetically charged vortices in the Chern–Simons–Higgs theory

In this paper, we prove the existence of finite-energy electrically and magnetically charged vortex solutions in the full Chern–Simons–Higgs theory, for which both the Maxwell term and the Chern–Simons term are present in the Lagrangian density. We consider both Abelian and non-Abelian cases. The solutions are smooth and satisfy natural boundary conditions. Existence is established via a constr...
